Drama: Ouran High School Host Club ep03

Official Site: TBS - Ouran High School Host Club

The 3rd episode lost a 0.7% rating to a 2.7% viewership.  That's fine with me, I mean, despite what viewership they get, I'll love this drama no matter what and it's no surprise that it'll fluctuate every once in awhile, it happens.
This episode isn't from the anime, and the character Jounouchi Ayame is only found in the manga, though she does appear in ep24 of the anime for a split second when Kyouya first met Tamaki.

Story:

Haruhi is running through the rain trying to get to the music room, thinking she'll be late.  As she arrives, she is greeted by the other hosts dressed in tropical costumes.  Because of such a rainy day, they wanted to brighten up the guests' day with something fun.  They remind Haruhi that the next week is the Summer Ball, but she requests the week off in order to keep up with her studies.  From 1st to 3rd, she was reminded by Kyouya that as an honor student, if she doesn't keep up her #1 spot, she'll be expelled.  Desperate to help her get her grade back up, they force her to choose a tutor between them, but refuses.  In the end, she is being tutored by 2nd year Vice President, Jounouchi Ayame.

While studying in the Host Club room, Tamaki, looking depressed, tells the others that his Kuma-chan (teddy bear) is missing and so is his Kuma-chan pencil.  Causing a ruckus, Ayame gets up from the study table and tells off the guys that they're being too noisy.  Her ability to talk without stopping to take a breath, causes all the hosts (except Kyouya... LIKE A BOSS) to start choking.  This led to them nicknaming her "Morse Code Lady".

In the foyer, Tamaki is passing out fliers with Kuma-chan's picture on it asking for help in finding his teddy bear.  As Ayame picks one up from the floor, Kyouya tells her that he drew 200 fliers in one night (Side note: Yusuke's character in "My Fair Boy" drew about 50 handmade fliers to pass out to customers in the street haha).  This irritates Ayame as he could have easily drawn one and made photocopies of it.  Haruhi asks her what had happened between them two that makes her so angry at Tamaki.  She tells the story of when she first met him 2 years ago, back in their last year of middle school.  Kyouya and Ayame are called into office and meet Tamaki for the first time.  Tamaki compliments Ayame and tells her "your straight hair is beautiful.  I think that your heart is as beautiful as your hair."  She fell in love instantly, but was put-off when she realized he used the same line to about 65 other girls.  She was even angrier when Tamaki, who she thought was stupid, ended up in 2nd place in the class ranking, taking her spot.  She gets irritated and realizes that the tension in the room has changed.  She opens up the window for some air, which damages the straightness of her hair causing it to return to its natural wavy state.  Ayame blames her appearance on Tamaki that she wouldn't have to straighten her hair if it wasn't for him.

Ayame runs out of the Host Club room, knocking over her pencil case revealing that she had Tamaki's missing Kuma-chan pencil.  She heads into the locker room to pull out Kuma-chan out of her locker.  She had stolen it previously when the host club wasn't looking.  She angrily hits Kuma-chan even though she treasures this.  Tamaki enters the locker room letting Ayame know that she is beautiful (basically with or without the straight hair) and invites her to the Summer Ball.

At the Summer Ball, Ayame is greeted with open arms and they dance happily.  When the ball was ending, it was announced that a special princess will be chosen to get a kiss from the King.  Ayame was chosen as the Princess of the Ball and it was announced that the kiss was to come from Haruhi, instead of Tamaki.  Haruhi planned to kiss Ayame on the cheek, but a jealous Tamaki, who was intending to stop her, accidentally pushes Haruhi into Ayame giving her her first kiss.  Of course in Ouran fashion, Haruhi gets angry, calls Tamaki a pervert and pushes him away.

Comments:
I don't know how much this corresponds to the manga, but using the anime as a reference, they killed 3 birds with one stone.  When Kyouya first met Tamaki (ep24), the Summer Ball in which they pick a Queen where the King will give a kiss (ep02) and the connection between Ayame and Tamaki all rolled into one to form one story.  I really hope that this doesn't rule out giving Kyouya an episode, though I can see it happening since the drama's main focus is Tamaki and Haruhi.

The small background moments really made this episode for me.  The actors are really getting into their characters and are able to portray them even when they aren't the main focus of that scene Such like:

Kyouya laughing in the background and Mori gave a "whatever" look as well.  Also a scene that I didn't get to capture was when they were dressing back up in their uniforms.  Hikaru and Kaoru were helping each other get dressed.  I also need to mention that during the flashback when Kyouya and Ayame went to meet Tamaki, Kyouya was totally different than his snarky, devilish attitude he has in present day.  That small detail that they added was really nice since it changed after he met Tamaki.

I'm still hoping they touch upon the Hitachiin twins' love for Haruhi, so far we don't have any indication of that, at least not intentionally.  But of course we are only into the 3rd episode and we have tons of storylines to get through.

With that note, I'm going to leave a picspam:
-----
(Kuma-chan's huge! and check out creeper Nekozawa)

(Of course the kiss change-up was Kyouya's idea)

(Seriously, such a devilish smile.  And look at Haruhi, all embarrassed)
